Hyenas are social carnivores with spotted hyenas being the most social and the Aardwolf being the most solitary. They are most well known for being scavengers but will also hunt live prey. The spotted hyena numbers gives them an advantage in chasing off other carnivores from their kill (although a clan of hyenas and a pride of lions differ depending on the size of each). Aardwolves are again the exception as they eat mostly insects (their skull has a reduced sagittal crest and reduced molars). Spotted hyenas have even shown to have pretty high intelligence in being able to act cooperatively to solve a problem in the way that some primates can.
Also, they are not canines. They're more related to cats than dogs, although not by much. They are more related to mongoose and civets.
They're very misunderstood creatures often being persecuted for being the thieves of the Serengeti. Lions will scavenge just as much as hyenas will if the opportunity arises.
And now for a feature for spotted hyenas, striped hyenas, brown hyenas and aardwolves.

some maing shots up there, and yeah more people should be made aware of the true beauty of hyena and not the image Disney gave us in Lion King -_-
Yeah Disney did give them a bit of a bad rap. But the the hyenas did eventually take care of the huge antagonist in the movie (Scar) in the end.
I do love them so much though, i think they're fantastic, annnnnd i love the fact that the females always rank higher than the males lol BOO YAH
I haven't even seen one myself I don't think!
