The giant ant eater seems to be the icon animal of the Reid Park Zoo. I think it's pretty neat.

great shot! they are so active, it's usually difficult to get shots like this.
i think this is Sophia... Could be Zoey though. Did she have a bald tail?
I work at this zoo ;)
Hoping to zoo keeper intern for the anteaters next semester.
If you don't know/haven't heard of why they are our symbol, I could explain :)

Awesome!
I volunteer at the Oregon Zoo so it's nice to meet other people who live in a zoo land XD.

And I don't see any bald spots on other pictures I have of this ant eater.

I thought I remembered reading something about it but probably couldn't recall the reason off the top of my head.

oh cool! what do you get to do there?
i started out as a volunteer last year and they decided to hire me on! It was very exciting.

If the anteater has a curly tail, it's xander, our male. If it is droopy, it's zoey, and if it is slightly bald on the end, and makes kind of a fish tail look, that's little miss sohpia.

as for the story, i'll give it short lol
We were the first to breed 3rd generation anteaters, so we hold the stud book for all the anteaters in AZA accredited zoos (for the species survival program).

A bunch of stuff.
I was the photo team chair for a year, there's animal talking to do, enrichment building for the animals, animal observation, there's zoo mobiles that go out to head start programs and retirement homes, animal care where we get to work with the keepers (after a year of volunteering and an application form) and there's special event hosting like zoo-brew, donation events and general zoo events that need the volunteer's help to run the events. I think the volunteers have the manpower of...well a lot of full time employees.

No idea if this will help but here's more of a view of the tail [link] I think it's the same anteater.

That's awesome. It's nice to see not super popular animals as zoo icons.

oh wow, that's a lot of things. My little zoo is too little to have all that stuff lol

That's sophia :) See how at the end the it looks like it was trimmed off? it kind of makes it look like an upside-down L shape? It used to be a lot worse.

Oregon zoo isn't too big, but it's not super tiny. The smallest zoos I've been to are mostly just small town zoos that focus on local animals. But they're still pretty nice.
OR Zoo is going through some changes in the next few years, bigger elephant exhibit, new polar bear exhibit and a few other things that fit with their 20 year master plan.

I did notice that there was a bit of fur missing in one picture.

How fortunate! I wish we could redo our polar bear exhibit, but our new polar bear seems to appreciate it quite a bit. We are also working on our elephant expansion which is opening the 26th! I am very excited.
