Tis the season for families to take the family portraits for their holiday cards.
The aviary has a family of guira cuckoos that were all (or most) in the window between the indoor and outdoor exhibit.

Many pictures were taken. I like the one furthest to the left with the what looks like skewed head feathers.

:D Thanks!
These cuckoos are adorable. I think they may be nesting again. There's at least two that hang out in a nest area quite a bit.

They look adorable. I now they are not very nice birds when it comes to breeding. I know they leave their eggs in other nests to be raised by a different bird species. The young cuckoo get rid of the original young when it hatches.
But I believe not all cuckoo's do this.

These guys are actually different from most of the other cuckoos. The guiras have their own nests (not sure if they take other bird nests) but they'll raise their own young cooperatively, which is pretty neat.
The last time I visited the aviary there was some activity in a nest, that may have been built by the monk parakeets that also share the exhibit. The parakeets had a cove in the bottom part of the nest and a cuckoo was on top of the nest. No idea if there will be babies in the future, or if they were just hanging out on a pile of sticks.

They're not the most common bird you'll see in zoos, but they're one of the most adorable!

There was one or two little cuckoos who gave me a lot of grumpy looks. The other was generally curious about everything.

Nope not eagles. Too small for that. They're a species of cuckoo known as Guira cuckoos. They're really social and they're native to South America.
