Was looking for magpies to photograph during my visit to Montana in September. No magpies in Portland...which is sad...because they're cute. (I will say this about every corvid I think)

Returned to editing pictures and noticed that the adult on the right has no upper beak. But seems to be finding and consuming food just as well as everyone else. And the kid on the left has no tail (maybe due to a molt).
Not sure if the missing beak is a deformity or if it broke.

It's amazing how animals can adapt and survive, despite their injuries. As for the tail-less one on the left, he's just a baby, growing his first tail in. 83 You can tell by the pink corner of the mouth it's a bitty.

Lovely shot!

I kinda figured it was a youngster or one during a molt since it was around that time of year. I've never seen magpie tails just lying on the ground. I find crow feathers all the time.

I find magpie tail feathers now and again, but they're highly coveted by other birds for thier nests, because of the way they shine. The local barn swallows go crazy for them. But Magpies only molt one feather on each side of the tail at a time, so you'll never see an adult without a tail unless they've been attacked by something like a cat or dog.
