Paiute (upper cougar) was wandering around the exhibit and climbed up the log for a better vantage point. Then Chinook decided she also wanted to climb the log to get a better look, probably at the farm, or the little children running around the zoo. This left Paiute stuck. So he made the best of it and turned Chinook's tail into a toy.
It took her a minute to turn around and give him a good swat on the face. Unfortunately for picture sake, she turned away from the viewing area, so no snarling pictures. Still a cute moment.
Also overheard that the zoo has plans to breed these two since they're compatible. And one of the head North America keeper holds the cougar studbook. There are also zoos around the country that have space for new cougars, so any cougars born will have homes to go to.

Thank you very much. These guys are a bit on the difficult side to photograph, with them sleeping a lot, and their exhibit is a bit dark, but it looks really nice and natural.

Cool, how large is their exhibit?

It's 4,260 sq. feet with about 22feet of vertical space with trees to climb up. The female of the pair likes to position herself in almost like a cradle position on some of the branches.

Told myself I wasn't going to Fave any more kitties or big cats for a while, then this came along (dammit). A quite excellent moment you've captured here - classic reversion to kitten!

The male is full of energy and just wants to play. He's gotten the female to chase around for now. But she'll let him know when she's had enough.

He is pretty cute. he's about a year old which adds to his playful attitude. Even if Chinook is prone to swat him for being too hyper.

Me too. But she turned away from the viewing area when she turned to swat him. Didn't get him very hard, but enough to get him to stop.

Are these the two which were just introduced recently?

They are so beautiful. Cougars are just a blast to watch play, such incredible energy and agility. :D

Chinook has been there for a few years with another cougar named Takini, but she passed away a year or so ago. So Chinook was alone for a while. Paiute comes from a place in Idaho and was recently introduced to Chinook. They get along for the most part now, aside from all the hissing Chinook gives Paiute from time to time.

I'm sorry to hear about the previous female passing. I do remember you talking about this newer female though as well. I'm happy to hear that they are getting along well for the most part. If cougars don't kill eachother that very first day, then everything will be perfectly fine. Female cougars can be quite particular when it comes to breeding. So let's cross our fingers and hopethat Chinook has got what it takes to impress the new female. Baby cougars are the most adorable of the big cats. If you've got the future possibility of baby lions and cougars, that would be incredible. :D

Yup. that exhibit is REALLY hard to take pictures in. Have to wait for the right angle for the sun to come around, if the sun ever comes out.
Haven't had many babies this year. One Saki monkey that I caught a glimpse of clinging to mom.
