Booby bird by DeeOtter Booby bird by DeeOtter
I think this is one of the only boobies, if not the only booby in a zoo exhibit. She was found injured off a coastline so the zoo took her in. And she now lives in the penguin exhibit on favorable weather days (which is rare in Seattle).

I don't know why they're called boobies...

Their name comes from the Spanish word, I believe, for something like 'stupid' :D Cause they were so trusting.

This is not the only Brown Booby in captivity, but is definitely one of that number :) I think if you look around on Zoochat.com (this great community for zoos and aquariums and such) you'll find one or two other institutions that hold Brown Boobies (and I think there are a few that hold Red-footed too).

I think I remember reading something recently about that. I think one of the Audubon facebook pages I'm following shared some information about the birds.

Awesome!
I'm kind of a lurker on that website. I mostly check in on the zoos that I visit the most frequently to see what news there is.

And that's because like many birds that nest on islands without predators they had no fear of humans and were easily captured. I hope she's doing OK in Seattle!

Yep. She's hanging out with a handful of penguins. She gets first pick of the fish. The crows and gulls that come by for a free meal don't dare take her fish.

iBird says "derives its name from the Spanish word bobo which means stupid or silly."
