Happy global tiger conservation day! July 29th is an international tiger awareness day. Fairly new since it was founded in 2010. Conservation institutions around the world are urged to celebrate this day to bring awareness to tigers.
There's...not a great estimate of tigers in the wild. I've read anywhere from 3-5000 tigers are remaining (WWF has a projected 3200 tigers remaining)
There is more than three times that many in captivity, some in accredited zoos dedicated to their conservation, others in certified sanctuaries, and others....in not so great situations being kept as pets, breeding stock, or even kept for trophy hunting.
Major threats include habitat destruction, conflicts with humans, global climate change, decrease in genetic variability, and other human related causes (things that I'd include here would include owning tigers as pets, and the inbreeding of designer tigers including white and tabby tigers that may take away attention from tigers found in the wild).
Portrait of Mikhail. He's usually the introvert of the two tigers (sister Nicole is usually out on the center rock while Mik is in the back in his cave like structure).

Oh! I know instantly that the tiger is Mikhail! I miss him!He is unchanged! Some time ago, I paint his portrait: [link] He is very beautiful! The reference photo that I use was given by a friend....but ,in finnaly, the photo reference seems to belong to someone else (NaturePunk). I'm not sure even now that was the same reference picture, because it was a slightly different angle between the 2 pictures. So, do you allow me to use your photo as a reference photo?Do you have another pictures with him? Thank you, Marius
Neat! It's nice to meet people who know animals from the Oregon zoo. Mik & his sister Nik are adorable. [link] is the only other shot of him alone that I have in the gallery right now (I have a BUNCH of other pictures on a number of hard drives) [link][link][link] and [link] are of the two together.
And yes I do allow my pictures to be used as references, thanks for asking first. All I ask is that you give credit in the description and I'd love to see the finished piece
Me too. I'm hoping to visit a few times during August. And hope that the wolves aren't moving until the end of the week. The announcement said 'Week of the 6th' so it's anytime that week.
